The BPDA has said as many as 62 office buildings downtown could be candidates for conversions. Officials said this month that the agency has a list of 10 active candidates. Combined, the four applicants so far would create 170 units. Some other cities are seeing significantly more conversion activity than Boston. One Chicago incentive program, for instance, led to proposals to create more than 1,600 units in that city. However, Boston’s downtown is smaller than many other major cities, and much of its architecture conversion-unfriendly.
