BBJ | Boston’s rate of apartment building will slow, says RentCafe estimate

Sep 2, 2024

The Boston area will see fewer rental units built in the coming five years than it has in the last five, according to an estimate based on apartment construction data.

Such a trend could worsen the region’s supply-and-demand problem, which has led to some of the most expensive housing costs in the country. The Boston metro area built 39,859 apartment units in the five years ending in 2023, according to apartment rental website RentCafe. But in the next five years starting in 2024, the region is projected to build only 35,772 — a drop of 10%.
