BBJ | Rafi pulls proposed Somernova expansion, for now

Feb 17, 2024

Boston-based Rafi Properties has withdrawn a zoning proposal that would enable the firm to build taller at its Somernova business campus in Somerville, with plans to refile the measure this spring after more discussions with local officials and residents.

Last year, Rafi proposed replacing Somernova’s low-slung structures with five significantly taller buildings totaling nearly 2 million square feet, with a goal of making the property a major hub for climatetech and “tough tech.”

Organizations like Greentown Labs and MIT’s The Engine are already tenants at the 7.5-acre campus, along with small businesses like Aeronaut Brewing Co.
