BBJ | Wu refiles commercial property tax bill

Jan 16, 2025

Boston Mayor Michelle Wu is again seeking to raise commercial property taxes this fiscal year, as she looks to rebuild momentum for the much-debated proposal now that homeowners have received their tax bills.

The mayor on Monday introduced a new version of the legislation that would hike the taxes to the same level as the measure killed in the Senate last month. The bill would raise the cap on commercial property taxes for three years in order to limit increases for residential properties and to avoid budget cuts.

The new proposal calls for residential tax rebates from surplus city funds in the event that lawmakers do not support the sought-after rate changes.
