Boston Globe | As housing crisis persists, Boston residents say Wu can do more

Oct 6, 2025

Boston residents have frequently identified the cost of housing as the city’s most significant policy issue, as soaring prices warp Boston’s economy and drive low- and middle-income renters out of neighborhoods they call home.

Now, new polling shows that the majority of Bostonians believe Mayor Michelle Wu’s administration should do more to address the problem, and support broad — potentially painful — policy changes to put a dent in the shortage.

The polling, conducted by MassINC for the statewide pro-housing advocacy group Abundant Housing Massachusetts, found that 81 percent of surveyed residents “need to take action to address Boston’s housing shortage and allow more homes to be built throughout the city.”

And conversely, some 43 percent of respondents described city government’s efforts to keep housing affordable as “poor,” compared to just 22 percent who said they were “good” or “excellent.”
