Boston Globe | Healey administration aims once more to redevelop Hurley complex

Jul 29, 2024

Governor Maura Healey’s administration is going back to the drawing board to redevelop a prominent, brutalist-style government complex that spans some 5.5 acres where Beacon Hill meets the West End.On Wednesday, state officials announced a new redevelopment effort for the Charles F. Hurley and Erich Lindemann buildings, which sprawl across a massive block between Cambridge and Merrimac streets, with an eye to addressing the “urgent need for housing.” The move effectively scraps a previous effort launched under predecessor governor Charlie Baker to repurpose the Hurley building — but not the Lindemann ― with a focus on life sciences and state offices. In 2022, developer Leggat McCall Properties won the bidding for the previous proposal with a $1 billion lab-office project that also included 200 residential units and some shops. Leggat McCall had not started applying for permits, though, before the project was halted.
