Boston Globe | Providence housing shortage: Demand is outpacing development, Mayor Brett Smiley says

May 24, 2024

Providence is increasingly listed among the best quality-of-life cities in the nation, but we don’t have enough housing for the people who want to live here, or for our neighbors who are looking for a new space to call home.

The scale of the problem is impossible to overstate. With over 96 percent of the state’s rental units occupied, Providence is facing an unprecedented housing shortage. As a result, rental prices are surging. The cost of rent is exacerbating the homelessness crisis and preventing our neighbors from having housing security.
