At a time when many Boston-area suburbs are focused on how to build more housing, and Boston looks to convert underused office buildings to apartments, the economics of building new residential projects is getting harder, fast. New housing construction, both in the city of Boston and across the region, has fallen considerably this year, amid lingering instability in global financial markets and an extended period of high interest rates and construction costs — conditions many developers and contractors expect to continue for the foreseeable future.
