Boston Globe | Rent Control Rears Ugly Head Again… Sad.

Sep 3, 2025

Massachusetts Attorney General Andrea Campbell on Wednesday certified nearly four dozen ballot petitions, advancing proposals that would restore a version of rent control across the state, subject the governor and Legislature to the public records law, and overturn the state law legalizing recreational marijuana closer to the 2026 ballot.

The group pushing a measure to create a statewide “rent stabilization” program, which would tie annual increases for most apartments to inflation, said Wednesday it plans to immediately launch its effort to collect more than the nearly 75,000 signatures required. A separate effort two years ago to put a rent control option before voters stalled after it failed to gather enough support.
