Mayor Shaunna O’Connell has announced in a release that the City of Taunton has been awarded a record $3.69 million Housing Works Grant from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to support the redevelopment of the Whittenton Mills property that has been deteriorating for decades.

“This is an incredible win for Taunton,” said Mayor O’Connell. “The redevelopment of Whittenton Mills will transform a blighted eyesore into a thriving, modern neighborhood that provides housing, jobs, and economic opportunity for our residents. We are grateful to the Governor and the state’s Economic Development team for recognizing the importance of this project and partnering with us to move Taunton forward.”

Four months ago, the Mayor’s Office of Economic and Community Development met with the state’s Executive Office of Housing and Economic Development to present the full scope and potential of the Whittenton Mills Redevelopment. The project will feature 390 new apartment units and 10,000 square feet of commercial space.
